Williams Bailey has the resources and expertise needed to represent you in a lawsuit against Pfizer.

On April 7th, after pressure from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Pfizer withdrew its painkiller Bextra from the market. Bextra (valdecoxib) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that causes less stomach irritation than other NSAIDs. It was originally intended as a simple pain reliever, prescribed most commonly for arthritis, but has been found to increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, as well as the severe allergic reaction called Stevens-Johnson Syndrome/Toxic Epidermal Necrosis.

The FDA required all NSAIDs (prescription and non-prescription alike) to include a black-box warning – the most serious – on all future packaging, highlighting "the potential for increased risk of cardiovascular events and the well described, serious, potential life-threatening gastrointestinal bleeding associated with their use."

Medical researchers had already advised doctors not to prescribe any COX-2 inhibitors to patients who have a history of heart disease. One scientist was even quoted in The New York Times as saying that Bextra "is a time bomb waiting to go off" (Nov. 10, 2004).

Compared to the other common COX-2 inhibitors Vioxx and Celebrex, Bextra was discovered to carry a higher risk of causing the lethal skin reaction Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS); a similar but more serious reaction is called Toxic Epidermal Necrosis (TEN). The primary symptom of both illnesses is a serious skin rash with blistering of the skin and mucous membranes. The reaction can be fatal or cause life-long disability.

If you or a loved one suffered a serious side effect such as a stroke, a heart attack, or SJS or TEN while taking Bextra, please contact us to file a claim.
